Youth Truth Survey Results
Many thanks to the students, families, and staff members who participated in the Clear Creek ISD Youth Truth Survey in October.  Clear Horizons had a 96% response rate from our students and a 100% response rate from our employees.  There were 87 Clear Horizons parents who completed the survey.

The Youth Truth Survey probed the participants’ perceptions about school engagement, academic rigor, interpersonal relationships, belonging & peer collaboration, campus culture, college & career readiness, and academic support services.  In addition, respondents were asked to provide feedback about school safety and student motivation.  To put our student feedback into a national context, the Youth Truth organization compared our Clear Horizons students’ ratings to the ratings of students from 491 other high schools across the country.

The campus leadership and CHECHS faculty analyzed the feedback and collaborated on a plan of action.  The summary is attached here for your review: Youth Truth CHECHS March 2019.pdf

We offer our sincerest gratitude to everyone who participated in the survey!  We anticipate that Clear Creek ISD will launch another survey in May or June and look forward to developing a continuous feedback loop from our Clear Horizons stakeholders.  Thank you!

Core Values Activity for Grades 9, 10, & 11 Advisories
Teachers will distribute the nurse's "injury cards" face down to their students. Go around the room and have each student share what the injury is and what they recommend for the treatment plan. Each student will be given a Band-Aid after discussing his/her card. The teacher will explain that, "It wouldn't be fair if everyone did not get the same thing".

Core Values Discussion Topics:
Does ensuring that everyone receives the same thing meet our definition of fairness?  How can it be that doing what's fair for all may not always be doing what's right for some?  Did the students' with serious injuries need a more personalized treatment plan tailored to their individual needs?  If so, how can that approach be applied to students in the learning environment and to employees in the work environment?  Do you have to always be equal to be fair?

Regular C Day Schedule with Early Release at 1:30.

Junior Gatsby Party!
Teachers.....Please follow the details that Mr. McGoldrick will e-mail the staff regarding the release of eleventh graders and timing of the event.

Core Value Spotlight:  Fairness
Fairness is about considering the needs of others. It's about treating other people the way you want to be treated. Fairness means playing by the rules and telling the truth. Fairness is reflected when you listen to people with an open mind and an open heart, thinking about how your actions will affect others. When we are fair, we do not take advantage of other people, play favorites, or blame others for our mistakes.

Core Value Discussion Topics for Advisory:
Have you ever thought,"That's so unfair!"  How do you know when something is unfair? Has anybody ever cheated you, lied about you, or tricked you?  How did you feel about it?  How did you handle it?

Texas History Month!

March is Texas History Month. From the Gulf Coast Plains to the Davis Mountains, from the citrus orchards in the Valley to the wind farms in the Panhandle, the rich history of Texas is rooted in its land and people. Texas history has also been deeply marked by events of great suffering and sacrifice, like slavery in the Republic of Texas, the siege at the Alamo, and the assassination of President Kennedy.  But it has also been filled with amazing achievements like the victory at San Jacinto, the invention of the first microchip, and the founding of the NASA Johnson Space Center.  During the month of March, take time to check out the history around our community!

ID Badge Checks
Coyotes......Remember that the school district policy is that all secondary students in grades 6-12 will wear their CCISD ID Badge on campus during school hours. Many students appear to have gotten out of the habit.  We will reinstate ID Badge checks and assign lunch detentions to those who are non-compliant.  If you have lost your ID Badge, make sure you order a replacement in the Main Office.  The replacement fee is $5.  Students who are continuing to get Temporary ID Badges will have a replacement badge ordered and their student account charged the $5 fee.

Welcome To Our Newest Coyote!
Please join us in rolling out the red carpet to welcome Lauren Thomas, the new Secretary to the Assistant Principal.  Please swing by the Main Office and meet Ms. Thomas!

Celebrating Black History Month!  Today’s Spotlight:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929 – 1968)
A charismatic minister motivated by the dream of equal treatment for all people, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Did you know that the actual name given to him at birth was Michael?  He later changed it to Martin. Dr. King was a third generation Baptist Minister from Atlanta who earned his doctorate at Boston University.

King was a leading civil rights advocate and an Executive Board Member of the NAACP.  He led the first Negro nonviolent demonstration in the United States, a bus boycott that lasted 382 days. During the boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, and he was subjected to much personal abuse.  From these sufferings, he emerged as a leader of the highest caliber.

In 1957 Dr. King was elected President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
During the eleven years of his Presidency, Dr. King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was an injustice, protest, or civil rights action.  He authored five books and inspired thousands through his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”.  Dr. King directed the peaceful March on Washington with over 250,000 people to whom he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.  He conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson. Dr. King was arrested over twenty times, awarded five honorary degrees, and was named the 1963 Man of the Year by Time magazine.

At the age of thirty-five, Dr. King became the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He donated the $54,123.00 prize money to advance the civil rights movement.

Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while standing on the balcony outside his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee. At the time of his death, Dr. King was preparing to lead a protest march in sympathy with garbage collectors who had gone on strike.

Joseph's Warriors is a 501c3 Charity created in honor and memory of Joseph P. Fleming, a ten year old League City boy who died of cancer on October 13, 2016.  He loved baseball and this charity baseball tournament is our main fundraiser.  We help promote childhood cancer awareness and provide meals and assistance to families affected by cancer at the Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas.  Last year we had many volunteers from schools around the area and we are once again reaching out to the schools to pass on the need for volunteers to the many clubs and organizations that require their students to have volunteer/service learning hours. Use the link below to register.

Consumer Notice from the Associated Press
Apple has made the group chat function in FaceTime unavailable after users said there was a bug that could allow callers to activate another user's microphone remotely.

Reports said the bug in the video chat app could allow an iPhone user calling another iPhone through Group Facetime to hear the audio from the other handset, even if the receiver did not accept the call.

If you want to take the extra precaution to avoid being spied on, it's advisable to disable FaceTime on your device until the bug fix is released.

For iPhones or iPads:
Go to Settings, then FaceTime, and then slide the green button off.

For Macs:
Open the FaceTime app. Put your cursor where it says "FaceTime" at the top-left of the screen next to the Apple icon. Select "Quit FaceTime" from the drop down menu.

Our 10th graders will travel to Armand Bayou Nature Preserve to plant 3,000 incubated prairie plants into the habitat.  Last week's lesson on the conservation efforts, biodiversity, and preservation responsibilities set the stage for our Coyotes to show the Core Value of citizenship.  They will be helping to maintain one of America's largest urban wildernesses!

Thank You, Student Ambassadors!

Historical Note:
Did you know that tomorrow the State of Texas will honor the memory of Stephen F. Austin by designating Saturday, Nov. 3rd, as the "Father of Texas Day"?  Do you know the history behind Stephen F. Austin's contributions and legacy?  He was a lawyer, administrator, and empresario who played a key role in the early Anglo-American colonization of Texas. After influencing hundreds of families to join his colony in central Texas, Austin became a fierce fighter for the citizens’ rights, economic prosperity, and, ultimately, their independence! Talk about embodying the Core Value of citizenship!  This Saturday, November 3rd, our state will recognize the tremendous contributions of our great pioneer patriot, Stephen F. Austin, as the “Father of Texas.”

    September Core Value = Respect

Respect is treating others with honor and dignity. Everyone has worth and dignity as a human being, whether they are young or old, rich or poor, male or female, or any other difference. This is why you should treat others with honor, dignity, and courtesy. There should never be any bullying, harassing, or manipulating in order to get what you want.

You can show respect in many ways. For example, when someone is talking, you show respect by being attentive. When you receive a gift, you show respect by saying “Thank you.” At school or at home, you show respect to those counting on you by being responsible, diligent, and thorough.

Self-respect means you recognize your own worth as a human being and you avoid anything that will damage your mind, body, or integrity. This means that you do your best no matter who is watching because what you do reveals who you are.

Respect does not mean you have to like everyone, and others might not treat you as they should. But even when you disagree with others or have to part ways, you can still treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

At Clear Horizons Early College High School, we will:
    Value others.
    Respect differences.
    Use good manners.
Treat people the way we want to be treated.
Show respect in person and online.
