Service Learning Opportunities

1.) The NASA Exchange –JSC will hold its community Monster Bash / Fall Festival on Friday, October 19th from 6:00-8:30 PM at NASA’s Gilruth Center located on Space Center Blvd.  We are in need of volunteers to WORK THE EVENT, 5:30-9:00 pm AND volunteers to ASSIST WITH SETTING UP during the day.  Family activities include a Children’s Party complete with a Haunted House, Bounce House, Costume Contest, Face Painting, Music by DJ, Pumpkin Decorating, Pie Eating Contest, Mummy Wrapping Contest, Tissue Box Booty Ball Game, Boo Bowling, dancing and more.   And, new this year, a Video Gaming Truck, Escape Room and games specifically for older kids.  A food truck will be available for dining options.

2.) Harris County Precinct One Fall Kid's Fish Fest on October 20, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Challenger Seven Memorial Park. Attached is our Volunteer Registration Form that will need to be filled out by each participating volunteer.  Parent/guardian signatures are required for any volunteers under the age of 18.  Bring the Volunteer Registration Form with you on the day of the event.  See Ms. Kahlich for volunteer form.

3.) 
Volunteers are needed for the Toughest 10K, the 2nd race of the Texas Bridge Series, on Saturday, October 20, from 5 AM – 12PM at 8522 Teichman Rd. Galveston, Texas.   Volunteers will man the water table, monitor the course, pass out items, and CHEER! Please contact Jessica Pineda: jpineda@tbotw.org to volunteer.


4.) 
 Halloween Celebration in David Braun Park in Nassau Bay - 18900 Upper Bay Rd, Houston, TX 77058  Saturday, October 20th.

                Set Up: 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
                Event Time: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
                Clean Up: 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Activities: Work games, s’mores at firepits, passing out giveaway treats, rides on the Haunted Trail, or being scary monsters on the Trail.

5.) Service Learning Opportunity – Join the Inaugural Exhibition ofCanstruction to benefit the San Jacinto College Food Pantry, November 5-8 in room S12.101 (ILC Kaleidoscope Room). The steps to participate are the following:
  1. )Register a team (8-10)
  2. )Receive an entry packet for your team
  3. )Attend the Canstruction kickoff on October 17
  4. )Deliver you cans and build Nov. 5-7

Baywind Village Service Learning Announcement

It is time for the annual Baywind Village Care Center’s Halloween Carnival!  It will be held on Sunday, October 28 from 2-4 PM.  Volunteers are needed and will receive 5 ½ hours. Volunteers will set up, run booths, handout candy, and clean up.  Students can sign up for one or more shifts. Shifts are 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM, 1:30 – 3:00 PM, and 3:00 – 4:30 PM.  Please email activities@baywindvillagecare.net to volunteer.

Clear Lake United Methodist Church is looking for volunteers for the annual Trunk or Treat Halloween Community Outreach.  They are asking students to use the link to sign up and then host a trunk for the “Trunk or Treat.”  Come to the parking lot at 5:30 on October 31 with your trunk decorated and two bags of candy (more candy will be provided if participants bring 2 bags).

8.  We would love to invite Clear Horizons Students that would like to earn volunteer hours to join us at the Robinson Elementary PTA  annual fall festival.  It will be held November 3, 2018 from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm.  Our past success has been achieved by our wonderful student volunteers and the Clear Horizons students have been a huge part of that!  Please have students sign up at the link below:





9.) Students interested in assisting the elderly can volunteer at Autumn Leaves located at 14225 Crescent Landing Drive, Houston, Texas 77062 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Autumn Leaves is looking for students who are willing to play board games, dominos, and bingo with residents.  Please see Mrs. Kahlich in 9.107 for more information. 

10.) Southeast Texas Great Dane Rescue organization is looking for volunteers to help at various events.  If you are interested in helping please reach out to Teresa Wright, volunteer@saveadane.org, and she will send you a volunteer application. 

 





 

Caregivers' Conference:  The Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Interfaith Care Partners 6th annual Caregivers' Conference is Saturday, March 18.  Volunteers are needed for Friday, March 17, from 12:00 – 4:30 PM, and Saturday, March 18, from 7:20 AM – 2:20 PM.  The primary responsibilities are to greet the conference attendees including speakers and exhibitors, assisting attendees with campus directions, and to be a workshop host (welcoming participants, distributing and collecting evaluations). Volunteers receive lunch catered by Pomodoros!  For information email Deb Hale, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church volunteer coordinator at isam39@verizon.net.

 

Seabrook Lucky Trails Saturday 5K:  Volunteers are needed for the The Seabrook Lucky Trails Saturday 5K, which will be held Saturday, March 18, benefitting the Clear Creek Education Foundation!!  This is a great opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles in your community and have fun at the same time!!

Don’t worry, Upward Sports will be there with you all along the way to provide all the resources you’ll need to instruct your team and have a lasting impact in their lives.

Time Commitment: 2 Hours per week

                1 hour practice during the week and 1 hour Saturday morning game

ASSISTANT COACH

Make a difference in the lives of young athletes by helping the head coach teach both athletic skills and values for success.  Use this time to see if you might want to be a head coach in the future.

Time Commitment: 2 Hours per week

                1 hour practice during the week and 1 hour Saturday morning game

REFEREE

Do you have a passion for the sport and have a working knowledge of the rules of the game?  If so, use this gift to make an impact in the lives of young athletes as an Upward Sports Referee. Be the one who can make the necessary calls, uphold the integrity of the game, and help athletes improve their understanding of the sport.

Time Commitment:  Saturday Mornings

 

CCISD Science Extravaganza:  The CCISD Science Extravaganza is in need of volunteers Wednesday, March 22, at Space Center Houston. Volunteers are needed at the following times: 

Set-up help: 4:00-6:00PM     Event help: 6:00-8:30PM

Paws With A Cause:  The non-profit, CANBE, is hosting the first annual Paws With A Cause fundraiser, benefitting the Nassau Bay Animal Shelter on Saturday, April 1, from 11am-3pm. All volunteers will receive a delicious lunch cooked by the Holy Smokers from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and the thanks of the CANBE and the City of Nassau Bay Animal Shelter. If you are interested, please email Mrs. Nylen at nnylen@ccisd.net by Friday, March 10.

 

Clear Lake United Methodist Church Eggstravaganza:  Clear Lake United Methodist Church will hold their annual “Eggstravaganza” Saturday, April 15, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and are in need of several helpers to run stations. This is an outreach to our surrounding community as many of them come and hunt eggs, get pictures with the Easter bunny and have fun. The Crossings Fish Fry:  Twenty students are needed to volunteer at The Crossings Fish Fry on Sunday, April 30 from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  Students will be involved in setting up, including decorating, bringing in auction items, plating food to serve guests, fill beverages, and clear up plates. The location is 255 N. Egret Bay Blvd. in League City.  Students should comply with school dress code or you may be asked to leave.  If you are interested, please email Mrs. Nylen at nnylen@ccisd.net with a phone number and email address.
