Spanish Club T-Shirt Contest:  Spanish Club is holding a t-shirt designing contest for the Spanish club shirt. Designs need to be created digitally. You must submit your design to Ms. Maldonado by TODAY Wednesday, October 12 in order to be considered for the contest. The winner will win a free t-shirt and a sombrero. Suerte!

 

Business Professionals of America:  Clear Horizons in proud to announce the establishment of a Business Professionals of America (BPA) chapter.  BPA promotes workforce skills through both individual and team competition.  If you are interested in receiving more insight into BPA, please attend an informational meeting TOMORROW Thursday, October 13, at 3:30 in room 9.116.  Ms. Kahlich will be happy to answer any questions about this organization.  

 

Spanish Club:  Spanish club’s next meeting will be held TOMORROW Thursday, October 13, in Ms. Maldonado’s room starting at 3:30. We will also be voting for our favorite t-shirt design submitted by club members at this meeting. We hope to see you there!

 

Senior Class Car Wash:  Clear Horizons Class of 2017 is having a Car Wash!! Get your car washed and donate to the senior class Saturday, October 15, from 9:00AM – 1:00 PM.  The car wash will be held in the Riley’s Donuts parking lot, located at 2407 W Parkwood Ave., Friendswood.  Come grab a donut while we wash your car!

 

Medical Club:  The Clear Horizons Medical Club will have a new meeting date this year! The new meeting days will be every 3rd Tuesday of each month. There is an upcoming meeting next Tuesday, October 18, at 3:30 in Room S9.116. Hope to see you there!

 

National Hispanic Heritage Month: This week Spanish club would like to showcase Sandra Cisneros, a Chicago born Mexican American, who has been a great influence in Hispanic American history. Her contributions to literature include various poems and novels. The House on Mango Street is her best known work that has earned various awards and has been translated into 20 languages. Most of her work deals with topics such as feminism, religion, poverty, and oppression in mainstream society.   Her work has been influential and inspirational to countless people, especially the Hispanic community.

 

NHS Table Tutors: Would you like to have a free tutor who has successfully navigated the Horizons workload? Come to the BQR on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to get immediate help, schedule an after school tutoring session (held in a high school teacher's classroom), or to find out more about secrets of success at Horizons. These friendly experienced tutors will be stationed at a table near check-in between 1:15 -1:45 pm. What a great resource - but only if you use it! 

 

 

Late Bus:  Clear Horizons provides a late bus that runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM.  The late bus will be in front of our school by 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and typically departs within 10 minutes. The late bus will drop off in two locations: The East side of 45 at Clear Creek High School and on the West side of 45 at Brookside Intermediate. Students who are planning on riding the late bus must request a pass from the office. The request must be made for official business only (ie tutorials, a rehearsal, detention, etc.). A bus pass must be picked up before 1:00 p.m. on the day you want to ride (Tuesday or Thursday). No bus passes will be issued after lunch.  If you do not have a pass you will not be allowed to ride the bus.  If no one has picked up a late bus pass, the bus will be cancelled. Students, make sure that your parent/guardian knows that you are staying late and catching the late bus. The front office closes at 4:00 p.m.  When signing up for pass students must include the following:

1) Purpose – Why are you staying late?

2) Location from 3:30 – 5:00 – Where will you be?

3) Parent Permission – Did you let your parent know you were staying late?

The reason we must have this information is so that we can find you in case of an emergency.

 

 

Service Learning Opportunities:

 

Texas Bridge Series:  Volunteers are needed for the Texas Bridge Series running events.  Volunteers will be helping with set up and clean up, packet pickup, t-shirt and swag distribution, and water aid stations.  The three races are on the following dates:

Saturday, October 15, Galveston Causeway, 5:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Sunday, November 20, Sylvan Beach Park, La Porte, 5:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Space Center Rotary Shrimporee 2016:  The Rotary Club of Space Center is hosting the 2016 Shrimporee Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Landolt Pavilion at Clear Lake Park.  To volunteer to work the Shrimporee you must use SignUp.com:

Park to Port Bike Ride:  Volunteers will be needed to help with set up, direct participants along the routes and cheer! The ride will take place October 15, 2016.  The 20-mile ride will start in Hermann Park and travel east along the Bayou Greenway trail on Brays Bayou to the Port of Houston.  To volunteer please contact Dianne Kerr at volunteer@hermannpark.org

 

Whitcomb Elementary Fall Festival:  Whitcomb Elementary PTA is having the annual fall festival Saturday, November 5, and would love to have some Clear Horizons students' help. Volunteers are need to help set up the afternoon before, Friday, November 4, from 4pm-6pm and the day of the festival, Saturday, November 5, from 11am- 5:30pm.  Students may volunteer for as little or as long as they want within these time frames. Upon arriving, students will need to check in at the volunteer table and find out what area they are needed. Once they have completed their service, they can check out and receive their confirmation of volunteer service letter.  Please contact Kerriann Kievit at whitcombpta1vp@gmail.com with the hours you would like to volunteer.

 

Robinson Elementary Fall Festival:  The Robinson Elementary Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, November 12, from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.  Robinson is currently in need of many student volunteers and adults to help run gaming booths, inflatables, and food serving areas.  There will be 30 minute shifts.  To sign up, please go to the following link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c44a4ab2aaaff2-2014

 

Hermann Park Run in the Park:  Run in the Park is Hermann Park Conservancy’s annual fun run, which includes a 5K run/walk and a 1K kids’ fun run. The event starts in Molly Ann Smith Plaza and circles the Park on the Marvin Taylor Trail.  The run will take place November 12, 2016.  To volunteer please contact Dianne Kerr at volunteer@hermannpark.org
