Clear Horizons Student Ambassadors:  Do you have an interest in supporting incoming students as they adjust to life as a Coyote?  Would you be interested in speaking or assisting campus information nights?  Would you want to be a student leader in Coyote Camp?  If so, consider applying to be a Clear Horizons Student Ambassador!  This is a new leadership opportunity for students to both serve and represent our campus by supporting new students from the time they’re curious 8th graders until they set foot on campus!  Get more information by picking up an application in the Horizons Front Office.  Hurry!  Applications are due by the end of the day Tuesday, Dec. 13th!

 

College Textbook Return:  All students must return any SJC textbooks before the end of this semester.  Textbook returns will continue through TODAY Thursday, Dec. 8.  Students will return textbooks during Advisory. 

 

MSA:  The Muslim Student Association is having a meeting in the BQR Thursday, December 8, after school from 3:30 to 4:30. Everyone and anyone is welcome, and snacks will be provided.

 

Spanish Club:  Spanish Club will be meeting today, Thursday, December 8, afterschool in Ms. Maldonado’s room at 3:30. Please join us to learn Latin dances and for a traditional Latin snack.

 

Medical Club Fundraiser:  The Clear Horizons Medical Club is selling "Rudolph's Treats" for $1.00 through Friday, December 9. The treats will include hot cocoa, your choice of chocolate chips, marshmallows, and peppermint chips! Surprise your friends, teachers, and family with this warm holiday treat! Please speak with a medical club member for more details and purchase from Ms. McGill in Rm. S9.152. 

 

Seniors participating in the Winter Mini: Seniors who register in advance for the Winter Mini Session will receive textbooks by Friday, December 9; Seniors who register for the Winter Mini during Intersession will receive books during the first week of class. 

 

Ugly Sweater Contest:  Student Council is sponsoring an ugly sweater contest, Friday, December 16 during the Winter Celebration. Everyone is encouraged to wear an ugly sweater and enjoy the fun.  Prizes will be given to the ugliest! 

 

College Textbooks for the Spring Semester:  All students will receive SJC textbooks for the Spring semester within the first 2 weeks of San Jac classes in January. 

 

Attention All Filmmakers:  The Texas Association of School Boards is conducting a student video contest “Show the World Why Your School Rocks!”  What makes your school exceptional? Why do you love it so much? How has your school earned the support of the community? What makes Texas public schools the best choice? Make a video to show the world why your school ROCKS! You just might win some money for your classroom or campus!  There can only be one entry per campus.  Interested filmmakers should stop by the office and pick up an entry form.  Videos are due to the Clear Horizons Office no later than the end of the school day, Friday, January 6, 2017.

 

CCISD Exam Week:  Clear Horizons will have semester exams December 12 – 15.  Semester exams will be given on the following days:

Monday, December 12 – Periods 1 & 2

Tuesday, December 13 – Periods 5 & 6

Wednesday, December 14 – Periods 3 & 4

Thursday, December 15 – Periods 7 & 8

 

BPA:  BPA will meet in room 9.116 Tuesday, December 13 at 3:30.  We will plan our team events and review the individual events. 

Video Game Tournament Fundraiser:  On Thursday, December 15, Clear Horizons will be hosting its second annual gaming tournament for Child’s Play Charity in the BQR. Child’s Play is a charitable organization that provides toys and games to children in the hospital for extended periods of time. There will be two different tournaments, one for Chess and one for Smash Bros 4. In order to be part of this exhilarating experience, sign up in Mr. Martin’s room, S9.108, by December 13. The cost of admission for the Smash 4 tournament is $3, the Chess tournament is $2, and general admission is $1. Those who purchase general admission tickets will have the opportunity to play games on consoles set up around the BQR, but will not be entered into either tournament. There will also be prizes for the top three winners in each tournament. We recommend that those participating in the Smash 4 tournament bring their own controllers (preferably wired) or bring their ID badges in order to rent out controllers provided by the tournament organizers.

 

Math Club/Math Contest:  There is a free math contest at University of Houston, Main Campus Saturday, January 28, 2017 and the more students we have participate, the greater the chance we could win a school trophy. There are course contests (students must be enrolled in the course): Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Cal (Calculus I students are eligible for Pre-Cal test).  There are open contests, too: Statistics, Physics, Calculus,  and Calculator. At lunch, there is a Smackdown, single elimination contest, with questions from Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Please sign up by emailing Mrs. Hampton at champton@ccisd.net to indicate which contests you would like to enter.  We are practicing Smackdown at our next math club meeting on Thursday, December 8, at 3:30 in Room 9.266.  The UH Math Contest is from 9a.m.- 1:00p.m.  Prizes and scholarships will be awarded.  A bus will be provided for those students who wish to participate.  The bus will leave Clear Horizons at 8:00 AM and return at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 28, 2017.

Yearbook:  Yearbooks are currently for sale for $30 on balfour.com.  The price will increase to $35 on January 1. You may also pay cash or check, payable to CHECHS, to Mrs. Hampton in Room 9.266.  On balfour.com, you may also purchase ads that you design yourself ($20) and order nameplates and other extras for your yearbook.  Deadline for the extras is December 31.  Order yours today!

 

NHS Table Tutors: Would you like to have a free tutor who has successfully navigated the Horizons workload? Come to the BQR on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to get immediate help, schedule an after school tutoring session (held in a high school teacher's classroom), or to find out more about secrets of success at Horizons. These friendly experienced tutors will be stationed at a table near check-in between 1:15 -1:45 pm. What a great resource - but only if you use it! 

 

Late Bus:  Clear Horizons provides a late bus that runs every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM.  The late bus will be in front of our school by 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and typically departs within 10 minutes. The late bus will drop off in two locations: The East side of 45 at Clear Creek High School and on the West side of 45 at Brookside Intermediate. Students who are planning on riding the late bus must request a pass from the office. The request must be made for official business only (ie tutorials, a rehearsal, detention, etc.). A bus pass must be picked up before 1:00 p.m. on the day you want to ride (Tuesday or Thursday). No bus passes will be issued after lunch.  If you do not have a pass you will not be allowed to ride the bus.  If no one has picked up a late bus pass, the bus will be cancelled. Students, make sure that your parent/guardian knows that you are staying late and catching the late bus. The front office closes at 4:00 p.m.  When signing up for pass students must include the following:

1) Purpose – Why are you staying late?

2) Location from 3:30 – 5:00 – Where will you be?

3) Parent Permission – Did you let your parent know you were staying late?

The reason we must have this information is so that we can find you in case of an emergency.

 

 

Service Learning Opportunities:

 

Holiday in the Park:  Nassau Bay's annual Holiday in the Park celebration will be held this Saturday afternoon, Saturday, December 10 from 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM and they need volunteers! The City of Nassau Bay will provide letters of thanks and also note the hours volunteered (4.5 hours, for very easy and fun work).   They will have a large snow slide, a snow field for snowball throwing, and a separate snowfield for small kids, plus cookies and cocoa, visits with Santa, ornament decorating crafts, cookie decorating, and more!  Space is limited, so if interested, please sign up as soon as possible.  Please use the link to sign up using Signup Genius! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4caeab2fa02-nassau2
